Using Public Transportation

Since Deepa did not own a car yet, she relied on public transportation to get around the city. Every morning she walked to the bus stop near her building and waited for the number 12 bus. She paid her fare with a reloadable transit card that she tapped on a reader as she boarded.

To get downtown, she transferred to the subway, which was faster during rush hour. She learned to check the schedule and to stand behind the yellow line while waiting on the platform. When her stop was announced, she made her way toward the doors before the train arrived.

Over time, Deepa memorized the routes and felt confident traveling on her own. She even started helping newcomers who looked confused, pointing them toward the right platform or bus. What once felt overwhelming had become second nature.
